10/8: Youth Group at Musica

Since the late 1990s, these stylish pop-rockers have been swimming around the indie-rock ocean of Aussie acts, releasing three albums in the vein of emotive bands like Death Cab for Cutie and the Smiths. This time around, gloomy nautical blues abound on The Night Is Ours. No big surprise, since parts of the record were recorded in the band’s spiritual home: a ship moored at Waverton Wharf in Sydney Harbour. They laid down their tracks in the ship’s engine room, emerging with their moodiest set of tunes. The Night Is Ours is decidedly more laid back and atmospheric than 2006’s Casino Twilight Dogs, which brimmed with sparkling rock guitars, big cascading drums and anthemic vocals via curly-haired front man Toby Martin. The album sounds epic and romantic, and the band boasts an exotic and tragic swagger. Youth Group are definitely another one of Australia’s inventive and ornamental bands, and their sophisticated pop bravado is not to be missed at an intimate venue like Musica (51 E. Market St., Akron, 330.374.1114). Other Girls, Travis Caudle and Karta Stella open at 8 p.m. Tickets: $10. — Keith Gribbins
