10/17: Nevin Martell at Fireside Books

Posted By on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Nevin Martell will discuss and sign his new book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip, at Fireside Books (29 N. Franklin St., Chagrin Falls, 440.247.4050) today. He’ll give four small-group presentations starting at 1 p.m., followed by sessions at 2, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Fireside has special significance for Watterson’s hardcore devotees: It’s his hometown bookseller and the only shop granted access to autographed Calvin and Hobbes collections. (The last cache sold out more than 10 years ago.) Watterson retired in 1995; Time magazine has since ranked him as its No. 7 Most Reclusive Celebrity. Like previous quests for Watterson, the journey that produced Martell’s excellent book ends without input from the elusive cartoonist. But Martell managed to score several interviews with people close to Watterson, and he excavates all of Watterson’s previous interviews and public speeches. His presentation will include rare Watterson art not in the book. The free sessions are filling quickly, so call to reserve a space. — D.X. Ferris
