10/20: St. Vincent at the Beachland

Posted By on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 8:00 AM

St. Vincent is really Annie Clark, a 26-year-old singer-songwriter from Oklahoma who loads her albums with synth squalls, chiming harmonies and big, ready-to-collapse background noises. She used to play with the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens, so this all comes kinda naturally. On her breakthrough album, Actor, she slips, slides and slinks beneath the grooves — a wisp among the aural chaos. But her soft, often delicate voice can be misleading: There are plenty of jagged edges on Actor. St. Vincent is into brash, lush indie-pop, and Actor’s best songs (like the skittering “Strangers”) build a wall of sound around genre conventions. She might come with hipsters’ fleeting seal of approval, but St. Vincent’s smooth croons are genuinely nostalgic. The Buried Wires open at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $12 advance, $14 day of show. — Michael Gallucci
