10/24: Stellaluna at Ohio Theatre

Staging a children’s book always raises questions about the adaptation: Will it ruin the story? Will the costumes and sets fall short of replicating the book’s magic? Will producers try something so completely different that they’ll sever the critical connection the book has made with its young fans? Yet putting something familiar onstage to get kids interested in live theater is too appealing to pass up. Based on Janell Canon’s 1994 book, Stellaluna tells the story of a baby bat that gets knocked from her mother’s grasp and lands in a bird nest. Even though Stella’s new world is upside down, the birds care for her as if she were one of their own. The tale is brought to the stage with puppets in a touring production that comes to Playhouse Square's Ohio Theatre (1511 Euclid Ave., 216.241.6000) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets: $10-$14. — Michael Gill
