11/6: Clare and the Reasons at Beachland

Posted By on Tue, Nov 3, 2009 at 4:23 PM

The Muldaur family name might not be as prominent in musical circles as Wainwright, but it definitely boasts strong bloodlines. Patriarch Geoff Muldaur is a folk and blues man whose career stretches back to the influential Boston folk scene of the ’60s. He married Maria D’Amato, who, as Maria Muldaur, scored a hit with “Midnight at the Oasis” in 1973. The younger generation of Muldaurs includes Geoff’s daughters Jenni (an in-demand singer who has sung with Eric Clapton, Steely Dan and Lou Reed) and Clare, who fronts the Reasons. Although the Brooklyn group makes music with a certain Parisian quality (and not just because their latest album, Arrow, includes the all-French “Perdue in Paris”), there’s a lithe, airy vibe to its sophisticated art-pop soufflés. On “You Got Time,” Clare, her multi-instrumentalist husband Oliver Manchon and their able crew of cohorts combine ethereal vocals, an undulating minimalist rhythm pattern, punctuating percussion and swelling strings into an alluring, low-key gem. Frontier Ruckus and Lowly the Tree Ghost open the show at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $8. — Michael Berick
