11/7: Mirror of the Arts: For Closure

Posted By on Tue, Nov 3, 2009 at 4:35 PM

“My work is dark, not because I am depressed or angry,” writes local photographer Donald Black. “[It’s] out of respect for the struggle that remains in me. My work helps give a voice to the black culture in all its darkness and its beauty, even if the influence struggles to reflect this same beauty.” His For Closure series served as inspiration for a dozen Ohio writers whose work is included in the Lit’s new Mirror of the Arts program, which helps celebrate the organization’s 35th anniversary. Lit executive director Judith Mansour Thomas invited writers (including Eric Coble, Cavana Faithwalker, Kristin Ohlson and Erin O’Brien) to respond to Black’s gritty and shadowy photos of decaying, foreclosed houses. Black focuses on details — like cobwebbed plumbing, a cluttered table, a left-behind teddy bear — which give the writers a point of entry to the lives of the people who once lived in the houses. There’ll be food, drinks and music by the Vince Robinson Jazz Group to help kick off the works at 6:30 tonight at Convivium 33 (1433 E. 33rd St., 216.694.0000). Tickets: $35-$95. — Michael Gill
