11/14: Ethos Percussion Ensemble

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 4:29 PM

The ancient and the modern come together in the Ethos Percussion Ensemble. On one hand, it’s the most primitive of musical groups: four guys beating on things with bare hands and sticks. On the other, it’s a perfect medium for minimalist composers like Philip Glass, John Cage and Steve Reich. Ethos has performed works by all of these guys (and Frank Zappa!). Members Trey Files, Eric Finney, Yousif Sheronick and David Shively boast world and classical music credentials. Tonight’s performance will conclude with Missa Luba, which Father Guido Haazen, who arranged it, once called “a mass in Congolese style.” It features five movements from a traditional Catholic mass, sung in Latin by a tenor soloist and accompanied by drums. Showtime is at 8 p.m. at Cuyahoga Community College’s Metro Campus Auditorium (2900 Community College Ave., 216.241.6000, tricpresents.com). Tickets: $17. — Michael Gill
