11/23: Black Cobra at the Grog Shop

Posted By on Wed, Nov 18, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Whenever a drums-and-guitar duo takes the stage, you’re naturally forgiving if the sound doesn’t quite pack the punch of more populated groups. But save your pity for another band: Bay Area sludge warriors Black Cobra don’t need it. They’re going to rock your face off and leave you wishing you’d brought earplugs, safety glasses and a helmet to shield yourself from their relentless onslaught. Singer-guitarist Jason Landrian and drummer Rafael Martinez take the stage in relative quiet, set up quickly and get right to hammering out fast, rolling rhythms and riffs with hardly a moment’s breath between songs. Their third album, Chronomega, is filled with plenty of economical musical moments. Black Cobra’s sound is unassailable: Landrian’s low-end rumble paves a wall of sound as Martinez punctuates the structure with geometric battlements. They are big and they are loud. Get ready for a monolith of sound when they play the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.5588). Black Tusk, Own Weather and the Bom Selleck kick things off at 8 p.m. Tickets: $10. — Nick DeMarino
