11/27: Cleveland Orchestra with Jonathan Biss

Posted By on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Twenty-nine-year-old pianist Jonathan Biss is eight years older than Mozart was when he wrote the Jeunehomme (“Young Man”) Concerto. But that doesn’t matter, since the piece was originally written for a young woman — Victoire Jenamy, a famous dancer and friend of the young composer, who was a pretty good pianist. Biss performs the piece with the Cleveland Orchestra this weekend. He made his piano debut with the orchestra two years ago, but he made a sorta pre-debut in 1980 — several months before he was born — when his visibly pregnant mother, violinist Miriam Fried, played Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A Minor with them. Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra music director Bertrand de Billy makes his Cleveland Orchestra debut when he conducts tonight. Dvorak’s New World Symphony is also on the program. Showtimes are 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at Severance Hall (11001 Euclid Ave., 216.231.1111). Tickets: $31-$117. — Michael Gill
