1/9: Dan McCoy & the Standing 8’s at the Beachland

Posted By on Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 11:06 AM

Opening with the maudlin a cappella tune “In My Time of Dyin’,” The Journeyman, the first solo album by Rambler 454’s Dan McCoy, starts on a dour note. But it quickly picks up speed as McCoy offers up barroom-ready songs about overdue taxes and unfaithful girlfriends. McCoy channels Drive-By Truckers’ roots-rock on “Moving Day” and evokes Tom Petty on the rambunctious “The Knockout.” His own songs are distinctive, so the cover of Bad Religion’s “American Jesus” feels out of place. But that’s the only real misstep on The Journeyman. Recorded locally by Clint Holley at his Audio Spectrum Studio, the album features a solid balance of ballads and rockers, with lyrics that show off McCoy’s great feel for narrative. Heelsplitter opens at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $5. — Jeff Niesel
