1/18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Festivities

Posted By on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 11:39 AM

With no school today to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a host of activities are scheduled around town — some honoring King’s legacy, others just to keep the kids busy. The biggest blowout is University Circle’s annual celebration, which includes both tributes and diversions among the activities offered by numerous UC-area institutions. The free rink at Wade Oval is open from noon-5 p.m. with skate rental $3. At 1 p.m. at the King Branch of the Cleveland Public Library (1962 Stokes Blvd., 216.623.7018), local leaders will discuss how King’s influence still resonates. From 1-4 p.m., the Cleveland Museum of Art (11150 East Blvd., 216.421.7340) presents musical performances and hands-on art activities echoing the themes that King espoused. And the Cleveland Orchestra (11001 East Blvd., 216.231.1111) holds its free annual King Day open house from noon-5:15 p.m. with a plethora of performing groups (more info here). House of Blues (308 Euclid Ave., 216.253.2583) is also offering a free MLK celebration called Everyone Can Be Great. Like many of the University Circle programs, it features performances (as well as artwork) by various school and community groups interpreting King’s life, vision and legacy. It starts at 1 p.m. And if you’re just not in the mood for a bunch of uplifting stuff about tolerance, peace, respect, understanding blah blah blah, the Cleveland Metroparks Chalet Toboggan Chutes (16200 Valley Mill Parkway, Strongsville, 440.572.9990) have special holiday hours from noon-5 p.m. All-day admission is $8 adults, $6 kids 11 and under. — Anastasia Pantsios
