2/22: Lisa Dennison at Ohio Theatre

Posted By on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 12:26 PM

Lisa Dennison is the chairman of the North and South American branch of Sotheby’s auction house. So when she talks about “Building an Art Collection for Satisfaction and Gain” today, it’s natural to think her emphasis might be on the latter, since the job of an auction house is to persuade collectors to put their treasures on the market for great personal gain. But she’s also been director of New York’s Guggenheim Museum and chief curator of the Guggenheim Foundation, and organized more than three dozen exhibits of contemporary and modern art, since launching her career in the art-museum world in the mid ’70s, so she’s got a trained eye for quality. Few Clevelanders can play in the big-money pool she lifeguards, but who doesn’t like to hear stories about the splurges of the fabulously wealthy? And maybe she’ll drop in a few hints about how to assess art you can afford. She’ll be speaking at the Ohio Theatre (1501 Euclid Ave.) at 6 p.m. as part of the Town Hall of Cleveland speaker series. Tickets are $45. Call 216.241.1919 or go to townhallofcleveland.org for reservations. — Anastasia Pantsios
