3/13-14: Maple Sugar Fests

Posted By on Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 4:04 PM

Can you hear the sap running when you put your ear to the trunk of your maple tree? Maybe not, but this time of year, Northeast Ohio offers lots of opportunities to learn about and taste the products made from maple sap. At the Maple Sugar Festival at Hale Farm & Village (2686 Oak Hill Rd., Bath, 330.666.3711), visitors can help the staff collect the sweet sticky stuff while learning about the history of the process. Then it’s time to enjoy breakfast with the finished product: maple syrup. The program runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today, tomorrow, and March 20 and 21. Admission is $15 adults, $10 kids, which includes the pancake meal. It’s also maple-sugaring weekend at Lake Farmpark (8800 Chardon Rd., Kirtland, 440.256.2122), where — from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today and tomorrow — you can observe the process of maple-syrup production and follow its evolution from primitive horse-drawn sap-gathering to the streamlined methods of today. There are plenty of hands-on opportunities here too, like drilling holes, making maple-leaf crafts, and sampling fresh syrup and maple-syrup candy. Admission is $6; kids 2-11 are $4. A pancake breakfast, served all day, is $7; for kids 2-11, it’s $4. — Anastasia Pantsios
