3/26: John Zorn and New Masada Sextet at Art Museum

Posted By on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 1:34 PM

Hard to believe that over the course of his 35-year career, avant-garde jazz icon John Zorn has never played Cleveland. Tonight’s show at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s newly renovated Gartner Auditorium (11150 East Blvd., 216.421.7350) will mark his first Northeast Ohio appearance. While Zorn’s material is all over the musical map, he plans to play a set of klezmer-influenced music. Backing him is New Masada Sextet, a group of veteran musicians that includes trumpet player Dave Douglas, pianist Uri Caine, bassist Greg Cohen, percussionist Cyro Baptista and drummer Joey Baron. Extremely prolific, Zorn is outdoing himself this year, releasing a new CD on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Now entering his late 50s, Zorn is making himself incredibly accessible these days. His recent album, In Search of the Miraculous, is a warm and emotional recording inspired by “esoteric spiritual practices.” Tonight’s concert starts at 7:30; tickets are $34. — Jeff Niesel
