  • Anatolia Cafe

2270 Lee Rd., Cleveland Hts. Eastern Suburbs

    216-321-4400

A little bit Greek, a little bit Middle Eastern and perhaps even slightly northern Indian, the names, ingredients and flavor notes of Anatolia's authentic Turkish cuisine will strike familiar chords for veteran tabletop travelers. "Don't-miss" dishes include sleek and smoky baba ghannouj, lamb-and-beef doner kebab and its yogurt-topped sibling, iskender. To drink, splurge on a bottle of Kalecik Karasi, a full-bodied red from Turkey's most prestigious vineyard.

  • Austin's Smokin' Steak House

6535 Wilson Mills Rd., Mayfield Eastern Suburbs

    440-442-4340

Wild, woodsy aromas suffuse this friendly little restaurant, where hickory smoking, slow cooking, and mesquite grilling are the order of the day. Nearly everything, from the thick, sweet, and peppery BBQ sauce to the delicate biscuits in the strawberry shortcake, is made fresh and in-house. And for a real taste of the ol' West, be sure to try the zesty Smokin' Beans.
  • Bahama Breeze

3900 Orange Pl., Orange Village Eastern Suburbs

    216-896-9081

Although the kitchen at this Caribbean-themed restaurant (part of the Darden Restaurants chain) tends to keep the heat turned down, much of the food — such as pressed Cuban sandwiches, butterflied coconut prawns, pan-seared pork tenderloin in a rummy demiglace — is flavorful and attentively prepared. Still, the real draw is the bustling bar scene, fueled by shooters, beer, and boozy, fruity, and frozen concoctions designed to make every night feel like a week at the beach.
  • Ballantine

4113 Erie St., Willoughby Mentor/Lake County

    440-942-5151

A laid-back vibe, a killer bar, and an ambitious kitchen cooking up everything from burgers to braised lamb make this friendly East Side gastropub a worthwhile find.
  • Bass Lake Taverne

426 South St., Chardon Mentor/Lake County

    440-285-3100

Casual, cozy, and with a splendid secluded patio for warm-weather dining, this upscale tavern offers everything from burgers and ribs to filet mignon and veal medallions. The surrounding countryside is charming, and getting there on the winding Geauga County roads is almost half the fun.
  • Beach Club Bistro

21939 Lake Shore Blvd., Euclid Eastern Suburbs

    216-731-7499

Casually upscale and unselfconsciously cool, this neighborhood bistro is home to delicious gourmet pizzas, an intriguing collection of fish and seafood dishes, and a dashing wine list containing one of the region’s largest assortment of half-bottles.
  • Benihana

23611 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood Eastern Suburbs

    216-464-7575

Part of an international chain of teppanyaki restaurants, Benihana has long been a Cleveland fave for communal dining around hibachi tables, where knife-wielding chefs provide dinner and a show. Thanks to a lengthy remodeling, a sushi bar now joins the scene; while the sushi offerings aren't particularly imaginative, they are fresh and tasty.
  • Bistro 185

    991 E. 185th St. Eastern Suburbs

    216-481-9635

Neighbors have thanked owners Marc and Ruth Levine for "not being another wing-and-beer joint," while others appreciate them for not being too upscale. Bistro 185 takes the glorious middle road, offering hearty made-from-scratch comfort dishes at blue-collar prices.
  • Bravo! Cucina Italiana

28889 Chagrin Blvd., Woodmere Eastern Suburbs

    216-360-0099

Reasonably priced, family-friendly dining inside an upscale, Disneyesque facsimile of ancient Roman ruins is this Columbus-based restaurant's claim to fame. The menu focuses on pasta, pizza, or wood-grilled meats; for dessert, the partially caramelized cheesecake, in a pool of crème anglaise, tastes like more.
  • Brennan's Colony

2299 Lee Rd., Cleveland Hts. Eastern Suburbs

    216-371-1010

Still our pick for one of the best dinner values in town, Brennan's manages to combine the vibe of a well-worn bar with the quality of a contemporary bistro. While the kitchen does right by burgers, steaks, and sandwiches, the real thrills are the daily specials — full-meal deals ranging from porkchops, fresh fish, chicken and pasta, pegged at $22 or less.

  • Brio Tuscan Grille

24325 Cedar Rd., Lyndhurst Eastern Suburbs

    216-297-9232

The vast open dining room and mechanical service can make a meal here seem sort of hectic. On the upside, however, well-prepared entrées, such as rack of lamb and lasagna Bolognese, are both tasty and sensibly priced. Part of a Columbus-based chain.
  • The Cabin

28810 Lake Shore Blvd., Willowick Mentor/Lake County

    440-943-5195

True to its name, the Cabin looks like a cabin inside and out. Lounge acts play in the bar, where couples cut a rug after the dinner crowd thins out.
  • Claddagh Irish Pub

25389 Cedar Rd., Lyndhurst Eastern Suburbs

    216-691-0534

While real pubs are woven into the fabric of a neighborhood, you’ll find Claddagh (part of a national chain) adrift in the middle of a parking lot, surrounded by a shopping mecca. Once you're inside, though, evocative decor, friendly service and a multipage menu of well-prepared dishes, including a standout version of fish ’n’ chips, help soften the blow. Nor does it hurt that the full bar carries a solid selection of draft beers as well as every Irish whiskey available in the U.S.
  • Fire Food and Drink

    13220 Shaker Square East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-921-3473

A cool vibe and a sizzling menu of attentively prepared American fare have turned Doug and Karen Katz's bistro into one of the city's top restaurants. "Classical simplicity" is the watchword here, and when those classical techniques are applied to first-rate ingredients, the results are often nothing less than astonishing. Interesting list of food-friendly wines.

  • Flour

34205 Chagrin Blvd., Moreland Hills Eastern Suburbs

    216-464-3700

After 25 years in Little Italy, Paul Minnillo has moved to the suburbs with this contemporary restaurant serving modern regional Italian cuisine. The far-ranging menu includes small-plate-style antipasti and creative greens, as well as silken pastas and hearty entrées. A wood-fired pizza oven turns out killer Neapolitan-style pies. A deep Italian wine list and a patio round out this East Side gem.
  • Guarino's

    12309 Mayfield Rd. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-231-3100

Established in 1918, Guarino's is one of Cleveland's oldest restaurants and is still a family operation. While the decor tends toward Victoriana, the kitchen's pasta, veal and seafood dishes are all Italian.
  • Gusto! Ristorante Italiano

    12022 Mayfield Rd. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-791-9900

Romantic and very Italian, this intimate little restaurant features an enticing menu of well-prepared regional specialties, mostly from the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Best of all, the hands-on owners make everyone feel like part of la famiglia.
  • Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse

26300 Chagrin Blvd. (in the Clarion Hotel), Beachwood Eastern Suburbs

    216-464-0688

HPP's Beachwood location is big, manly and urbane, with all the trappings of an upscale midwestern steakhouse. Happily, the food — shrimp cocktails, Kobe beef burgers and of course, thick, juicy steaks — is as satisfying as the setting, and the place is as popular for after-work unwinding as it is for weekend splurges.
  • J. Alexander’s Restaurant

5845 Landerbrook Dr., Lyndhurst Eastern Suburbs

    440-449-9131

Yes, it’s part of a national group of Nashville-based restaurants. But J. Alexander’s still gets the nod for intelligently conceived and well-prepared food, served in a gimmick-free atmosphere. Prices are right, portions are huge, and the slowly roasted prime rib is probably Cleveland’s finest.
  • Jezebel's Bayou

    12718 Larchmere Blvd. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-721-3877

This attractive Larchmere Boulevard space is operated by the folks behind Angie's Soul Café and Zanzibar Soul Fusion. Here, the focus is on Cajun and Creole dishes inspired by the Big Easy: Think authentically prepared gumbo, jambalaya, BBQ shrimp, and étouffée. The seafood is fresh, the sauces vivacious, the portions robust, and the prices right where they should be.
  • Jimmy Daddano's Fine Italian Restaurant

6200 Enterprise Pkwy., Solon Eastern Suburbs

    440-248-2444

If you weren't born into an Italian family, dining at this unpretentious Solon restaurant could be the next best thing. Chef-owner Jimmy Daddano makes all his sauces from traditional recipes: Yeasty garlic rolls, slathered with butter and cheese, arrive fresh from the oven, and Jimmy's mom makes the homemade desserts from scratch.
  • L'Albatros

    11401 Bellflower Rd. East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

    216-791-7880

L'Albatros seduces diners with a roster of classic brasserie gems like escargot, roasted cod, and an outstanding selection of cheeses. But since this is a Zack Bruell restaurant, guests can count on more than a few contemporary menu twists, all served up in a series of intimate dining spaces and, in season, one of the region's loveliest secluded patios.
  • Lemon Grass

2179 Lee Rd., Cleveland Hts. Eastern Suburbs

    216-321-0210

A longtime fave for moviegoers at the nearby Cedar Lee, Lemon Grass offers a large assortment of reliably prepared Thai dishes, including a solid assortment of meat-free fare, in a bright and pleasant space.
  • Lopez Southwestern Food Club

2196 Lee Rd., Cleveland Hts. Eastern Suburbs

    216-932-9000

Colorful, quirky, yet sophisticated, Lopez's urbane charms present the perfect backdrop to its creative menu of "gourmet Tex-Mex" fare, ranging from lobster empanadas to mahi-mahi tacos and blue-cheese-piqued guacamole. There's also a solid selection of homemade desserts and an impressive array of top-shelf anejo tequilas.

  • Maggiano's Little Italy

26300 Cedar Rd., Beachwood Eastern Suburbs

    216-755-3000

Once you get past the fact that this restaurant is in an upscale fashion mall and nowhere near our real Little Italy, you’re likely to enjoy the elegant, 1950s-style decor and the big menu of well-prepared southern Italian standards served in oversized portions just right for sharing. Private parties, banquets, and corporate events are other house specialties.
