Let the Right One In
The recent U.S. remake Let Me In didn't do all that well at the box office, which is a shame, because it's a faithful and pretty good re-creation. Here's your chance to see the original 2008 Swedish version on the big screen as part of the Cinematheque's Halloween-week schedule. Let the Right One In is the best vampire movie ever made, but it's also a terrific coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old girl/200-year-old monster who befriends a bullied boy. It's a touching and occasionally bloody story that hits on friendship, puberty, and revenge in the most poignant and cathartic ways you can imagine. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 9:15 p.m. Friday, October 29.
Around a Small Mountain
An Italian guy becomes obsessed with a French woman who works in a traveling circus in this new movie made by eightysomething New Wave director Jacques Rivette. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 29; 7 p.m. Saturday, October 30; and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, October 31.
Art and Copy
A documentary about the advertising industry. It's kind of like a smoke-free Mad Men, but without the awesome Christina Hendricks. A panel discussion hosted by the design association AIGA follows. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 7 p.m. Thursday, October 28.
Carnival of Souls
Great atmospheric horror movie from 1962 about a woman who starts seeing ghosts and other weird things after she survives a car crash. Its twist has been ripped off many times over the years. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 8:45 p.m. Saturday, October 30, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, October 31.
Double Take
A bunch of Alfred Hitchcock movies from the '50s and '60s are mashed up for a look at the Cold War and other ruminations from the era. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 27, and Friday, October 29.
A Film Unfinished
A documentary featuring recently discovered footage of the Warsaw Ghetto shot by the Nazis. Opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.
Ghost Town
A look at a dying mountain village in China. It runs almost three hours, so apparently it's a slow death. Cleveland Museum of Art Morley Lecture Hall. At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 31.
Scream of Fear
Terrific 1961 Hammer shocker about a wheelchair-bound woman who keeps seeing her dad's dead body everywhere. Bonus: Christopher Lee plays a doctor. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. At 5:15 p.m. Saturday, October 30, and 8:15 p.m. Sunday, October 31.
