The Geauga Film Festival kicked off earlier this week and continues through Sunday, June 14 at Chardon’s historic Geauga Theater. The lineup includes independent films, shorts and animations, with a large showing from independent filmmakers from Northeast Ohio. Greg Pribulsky, Vice President of the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild, says the festival was created as an outlet for independent filmmakers to display their efforts to the public. “Most people don't understand the time and effort that is put in by these independent filmmakers,” he says. “Even a five-minute short takes lots of dedication and skill.” The festival is also promoting plans to create a film and TV school in Chardon called the Geauga Lyric Arts Center. The school will provide students with education in acting, directing,and movie development, and will house computer labs and media workspaces for the students. A few of the movie selections for this weekend include: Jean Claude, the Gumming Zombie (at 7:20 p.m. Friday, June 12), Clevelander Johnny K. Wu’s movie about a toothless Frenchman visited by a zombie plague; Ring of the Bishop (at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, June 13), Boston director K.M. Fitzgerald’s film about a man who’s lost his faith; and Red Battle (at noon Sunday, June 14), Vermillion director Matthew Zaleski’s movie about a man betrayed by his best friends.
