1) Slow West (3:00 p.m, 84 mins) Director: John Maclean; Starring: Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee
We'll drop almost anything to watch academy-award nominee Michael Fassbender onscreen, but especially when he's playing a "brutish loner" named Silas Selleck in the 19th Century American frontier. In this slow Western drama (filmed in New Zealand), Selleck guides a Scottish teen through outlaw country to reunite him with a lost love. Evidently, it's got one of the most original shootout scenes in recent memory.
2) All-Stars (5:00 p.m., 97 mins), Director: Lance Kinsey; Starring: Fred Willard, Richard Kind, Miriam Flynn
This Best in Show-style mockumentary written and directed by Cleveland-area natives should be a hoot. It centers on the trials and tribulations of a girls softball team, complete with families, coaches, players and the dramedy of youth athletics. Fred Willard was on-hand at the screening in Chagrin Falls last night, and may be around today as well!
3) Finding the Gold Within (7:00 p.m. at Akron-Summit County Public Library), Director: Karina Epperlein
This documentary, screening in Akron to kick of a series of screenings there this weekend, focuses on six young men from the Rubber City as they participate in a support program which focuses on artists outlets (drumming, storytelling) to help transform their lives. If you're from Akron, or care about it, this one's a must-see.
4) Factory Boss (7:15 p.m., 104 mins), Director: Zhang Wie
This drama from China centers on the manufacturing culture there, and the crisis of a toy factory when a lack of orders leads to worker unrest and an undercover reporter exposes hazardous working conditions. Jam-packed with tension and social critique, this one got passed the notorious Chinese censors and still managed to nab major acting awards at film fests around the globe.
5) The Incident (11:35 p.m. 100 mins), Director: Isaac Ezban
If you missed it yesterday, this Mexican Kafkaesque thriller has been described by CIFF personnel as "Groundhog Day in Hell." Two parallel storylines unspool as the characters are trapped in what feels like an infinite loop, both in extremely tense situations. If you're a fan of sci-fi or time travel, you've gotta check this one out. People have been buzzing since it screened yesterday.
