New to DVD this week

Thelma & Louise: 20th Anniversary Edition (MGM)

It's been 20 years since Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis hit the road, fooled around with Brad Pitt, and kicked up a new kind of feminism. Director Ridley Scott's you-go-girl parable is a mash-up of a lot of things: revenge pics, buddy movies, road films, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Its legacy rests in the story of two gal pals whose wild night out ends in the murder of some guy who picked the wrong ladies to fuck with. The Blu-ray debut tacks on commentaries, deleted and extended scenes, and a longer version of the famous finale. There's also a music video by Glenn Frey, which is enough to drive anybody to murder.

Amarcord (Criterion) — One of Fellini's most Felliniesque movies finally comes to Blu-ray. The 1973 Oscar winner takes a typically skewed look at the director's childhood, complete with bratty kids, idiot politicos, and horny old men. Tons of bonus material (interviews, analyses) connect the dots.

It's Kind of a Funny Story (Universal) — Actually, it's not that funny. Zach Galifianakis plays a toned-down Zach Galifianakis in a psychiatric ward who befriends a depressed teen who checks himself in. Not too many wacky things happen. The deleted scenes and interviews are kind of blah too.

Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount) — The sequel to 2009's quickie hit is more of the same spooky stuff seen from the point-of-view of grainy security cameras. But this time it takes place in a baby's room. Extras include "found footage," basically additional grainy camera recordings.
