Rio (Twentieth Century Fox)
This likable but flat CGI hit takes a familiar fish-out-of-water story (in this case, it's bird-out-of-cage, as a rare and pampered macaw from Minnesota ends up stranded in Brazil), drops in some saucy sidekicks (voiced by Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, and Tracy Morgan), and shakes the whole thing up with some of the most colorful animation ever seen onscreen. There are lessons learned about finding one's feathered self, but it's the zippy CGI — especially on the three-disc Blu-ray edition — that stands out here. Extras include a deleted scene, an interactive jukebox, and a look at the real Rio, where neurotic talking birds appear to be in short supply.
Dear Lemon Lima (Phase 4)
The big selling point of this barely released comedy is Melissa Leo, in one of the dozens of movies she starred in before she won an Oscar for The Fighter. She leads a cast of unknowns in one of those teen movies that likes to call itself quirky. It isn't. It's not very good either.
MST3K vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XXI (Shout Factory)
Gamera is a giant fire-spewing flying turtle. In other words, he's perfect target practice for MST3K's smart-ass robots. This five-disc box gathers all five Gamera movies from the cult TV show's third season. You'd be surprised how many jokes you can make about a giant fire-spewing flying turtle.
Soul Surfer (Sony)
It's based on a true story about a teen surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack, but that doesn't mean the proceedings don't drift out into the deep end of sappy moviemaking way too many times. After the third tear-filled scene, you'll be rooting for the shark to take the other arm.
