New to DVD this week

Paul (Universal)

It's no surprise that this comedy about a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking alien is loaded with geeky sci-fi jokes: Stars and co-writers Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are card-carrying members of the club. Two British nerds (played by Shaun of the Dead's Pegg and Frost) on a UFO-hotspot trip across the U.S. help an alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) on the run from men in black. Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, and Bill Hader are also onboard. With references to classic sci-fi movies, comic books, and dick jokes, Paul targets its audience. But you don't need to know the name of Admiral Ackbar's species to connect with the movie's bromance or gags about anal probes.

The Battle of Algiers (Criterion)

One of the all-time great political films makes its Blu-ray debut in this stunning new set filled with extras about the Algerian struggle for independence from France in the '50s. Gillo Pontecorvo shot his 1966 movie like a documentary, making the bloody revolution all the more brutally real.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Universal)

The movie that made Sean Penn a star finally comes to Blu-ray, and it's still one of the best movies ever made about American teens' high times and horny dreams. Extras include commentary by screenwriter Cameron Crowe and a look back, almost 30 years later, with the cast and crew.

Your Highness (Universal)

Danny McBride and James Franco play medieval brothers who set out to rescue a kidnapped princess. The cast — which also includes Natalie Portman as a kick-ass warrior — seems to be having a way better time with this stoner comedy than you will. Apparently dick jokes were all the rage back in the day.
