Jacques (Nicolas Duvauchelle) and Patricia (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) come from completely different backgrounds. He's a well-educated rich guy who rides around on a motorcycle and flies fighter planes, and she's the daughter of a poor well-digger. So when the two fall in love, you just know there's bound to be trouble. And when the girl's widowed father, Pascal Amoretti (Daniel Auteuil, who also directed) gives one of his well-digging pals permission to ask out his daughter, you just know there's going to be even more trouble. But that's just the tip of the iceberg here as the melodrama that ensures has a true air of gravity about it that stems from the deep class differences of pre-World War II France.
