Local film scholar Terry Meehan launches his Vintage Hitchcock series at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Lakewood Public Library Auditorium (15425 Detroit Ave , 216.226.8275, lkwdpl.org) with a free screening of 1927's Lodger. Before showing the film, Meehan will play a series of clips featuring early interviews with director Alfred Hitchcock. He'll also lead an informal discussion after the screening. The series continues with Blackmail (May 1), The 39 Steps (June 5), Young and Innocent (July 7) and The Lady Vanishes (August 14). All are free.
With the first decade of the 21st century behind us, it's time to put it in perspective. At least that's the philosophy behind the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque (11141 East Blvd., 216.421.7450, cia.edu/cinematheque) series Oughts From the Aughts. Cinematheque director John Ewing picked four movies that "placed first in one or more of six wide-ranging, prestigious surveys designed to find the best films of the past decade." The series begins with Lucrecia Martel's The Swamp, the Argentinian director's breakout 2001 film about a decaying country estate. It screens at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, April 1. The series continues with David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (April 8 and 9), Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Syndromes and a Century (April 15 and 16) and Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (April 22 and 23). Tickets are $8.
In April, Whole Foods Market will launch Let's Retake Our Plates, a film series dedicated to movies about food and the environment. "The intention is to support a community aware of the 'life' of the food on our plates," explains Whole Foods Market's John Kucinski, associate store team leader at Cedar Center. "From farm to store to table, there are opportunities for us as consumers to become more engaged in the process." The series begins at noon on Saturday, April 3, with a screening of Food Fight at Solon Cinemas (6185 Enterprise Parkway). It continues with the Oscar-nominated Food Inc., which screens at 7 p.m. Friday, April 9, at Lakewood Public Library (15425 Detroit Ave.). The rest of the series includes What's on Your Plate (April 10 at Solon Cinemas), Nourish: Food + Community and Homegrown (April 16 at Lakewood Public Library), King Corn and Big River (April 17 at Solon Cinemas), The End of the Line (April 23 at Lakewood Public Library), Fresh (April 24 at Solon Cinemas) and PolyCultures: Food Where We Live (April 30 at Lakewood Public Library). All are free.
