New York’s Brooklyn Museum gave rock-music photography the stamp of legitimacy when it mounted the sweeping exhibition Who Shot Rock and Roll, which it describes as “the first major museum exhibition on rock and roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music.”

With more than 175 items, it covers everyone from a young Elvis Presley to Eminem. It even has a section focusing on the fans.

The exhibit closed in New York on January 31, and it’s now going on the road, hitting select museums around the country.

One of those will be the Akron Art Museum, where the show will open on October 23 and hang through January 23, 2011.

It will be the largest exhibition the museum has ever hosted.

Currently, museum personnel are brainstorming to put together rock-themed events and promotional tie-ins with area media and music-related people and organizations. —Anastasia Pantsios
