Akron native Kofi R. Boakye, a 21- year-old Emmy-Nominated pianist, will host a fundraising concert on Friday, Oct. 15, at Edgar’s Restaurant in Akron to support his financial efforts as he aims to return back to Berklee College of Music in 2022.

Back in 2019, Boakye crowdfunded his first year at the college. His fundraising achievements along with a partial scholarship from Berklee helped him get through his first year.

The pandemic put his schooling on pause.

“I had to switch the focus from schooling to surviving,” says Boakye in a press statement.

At the age of 15, Boakye was accepted into the University of Akron School of Music’s Jazz Program, making him the youngest African-American pianist to ever be accepted into a collegiate-level jazz program at the university. And in September of 2016, he performed at the Akron Civic Theatre, making him the first teen pianist to ever headline a show at the theater.

“I’m African-American and from a single parent household," says Boakye. "Statistically, I’m not supposed to achieve the feats of being accepted into
prestigious and competitive colleges like Berklee. But you don’t let the past define you. You can create your own story; all you have to do is write it. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. I relish the change. I relish the college. Most importantly, I relish the challenge. I can’t wait to get back to Berklee and show what another kid from Akron is made of.”

Boakye says that doing "something positive" has always motivated him.

The event will feature an opening performance by local R&B music group the After Party followed by a special live performance by Boakye. Tickets are $25 for advance general admission and $30 for at the door. Donations and sponsorships can be made through the ticket link.
