Born to Play Congressional Fundraisers

Does Thunder Road lead to Capitol Hill?

I’ve been annoying Bruce Springsteen fans for years by insisting that he’s never had a working-class audience but rather one consisting of stockbrokers, lawyers, dentists, and other professionals living out their blue-collar fantasies through him.

A Washington Post article called “Nearly two dozen congressional fundraisers held at D.C. Springsteen shows last year” kind of proves the point.

Apparently, Springsteen’s D.C.-area shows have become the hottest ticket around for high-dollar congressional fundraisers.

While listening to Brooooooooce regale the crowd with his mournful tales of shuttered steel mills and the shattered lives of the unemployed, congressmen were schmoozing with donors and lobbyists in boxes often rented from special-interest groups and corporations.

One can only hope the lawmakers took a minute from listening to the pitches of these groups to pay attention to what Springsteen is singing about. —Anastasia Pantsios
