CD Review: DIE ANTWOORD

5 Track EP (Cherrytree/Interscope)

Between the two white South African rappers who make up Die Antwoord, there are maybe a dozen words you'll be able to make out on their debut record. Half of their rhymes are in English, but good luck figuring out what Ninja (who sports a Vanilla Ice haircut) and Yo-Landi Vi$$er (she has a mullet) are going on about. Keeping it real, they throw in a "fuck" here and a "cock" there, but it's all about the flow and beats on 5 Track EP. "Enter the Ninja," their breakthrough song, bookends the CD with the original and remix versions. In between are cuts about nasty girls, getting high, and fishpaste. The pulsating European-style beats suit Yo-Landi's helium-voiced choruses and Ninja's jagged verse bites, all of which give the EP the sound of a decade-old video game from another country. Don't bother looking for instructions.
