The four fortysomething members of Avon Lake's Time have played together since they were 16. Their camaraderie comes through on their self-titled debut, which sounds exactly like you'd expect a record made by guys raised on classic rock would sound. On the opening "Kissing You Goodbye," frontman Tom Coffin channels Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and Southside Johnny. And the blaring saxophone of the album's first half recalls '80s-era Springsteen. But Time's closing, "Let the Lady Win a Hand," goes for something more epic, evoking the Band but never quite hitting its mark. In between, warbling vocals, demented lyrics, and prickly guitars suggest that this group of middle-aged businessmen may be harboring a fiery punk spirit. — Jeff Niesel
