CD Review: Various Artists

Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International (Fontana)

Even before he had a hit, artists were covering Bob Dylan; everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Phoenix have put their own singular spins on his songs. This four-disc set gathers 75 cuts (most of them newly recorded) by artists ranging from Miley Cyrus to Pete Seeger, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the human-rights organization. And like any collection that jumps around genres and includes this many artists, it's a mixed bag. But it's also a testament to Dylan's breadth and scope that he has enough songs to go around. Tom Morello's "Blind Willie McTell" is a faithful interpretation; Ke$ha's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" isn't. My Morning Jacket, Adele, Sugarland, and even Maroon 5 pay tribute, with varying results.
