Five years ago, this local soul/rock outfit had created a fair amount of buzz throughout the region. Then, the band started shifting line-ups and it's taken five long years for it to follow-up its last release with the ambitious Left of the Right Direction, which does much to bring attention back to the band. The group worked with some top talent — Grammy-winning producer Edwin "Tony" Nicholas (Barry White, Mary J Blige, Gerald Levert) and Grammy-nominated engineer Nick Chahwala (Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Gym Class Heroes) — and it shows. Opener "Ain't That a Shame" features a breezy horn section and soaring, soulful vocals while "Nothin's Easy" delivers a good laid-back groove (and features local reggae hero Carlos Jones on percussion). "Quarter-Life" might be overwrought, but the band generally does a good job of keep the sultry soul rhythms from turning into light jazz schmaltz. — Jeff Niesel
