CD Review: Zach and the Bright Lights

John Mayer's insensitive blowups have left a surprisingly large void in Nice Guy Rock. So why can't this veteran singer-songwriter fill it? On his 14th album, Northeast Ohio softie songsmith Zach and his Bright Lights sound like they deserve the place in the sun that Blessid Union of Souls and Shawn Mullins momentarily enjoyed. "Great Beautifier" features a hook that's as good as anything those guys ever did. The rest of Luminosity is more tuneful than bland, even if its hippie love vibes lean toward the silly at times. Still, with songs like "Won't Be Gone 2 Long" he does adult contemporary as well as anyone. Can't wait to hear the great songs Taylor Swift will write after dumping him. — Dan Weiss
