Cleveland Rapper Atari Jones Releases EP with Australian Producer Papertoy

Music News

Atari Jones dropped his latest collection of new songs this week, expanding on the "indie stoner rap" sounds he's been cultivating for years locally and internationally.

Stream the EP below.

"This EP is a collaboration pairing melodic, gritty raps over a dark and distorted soundscape," Jones tells Scene

The disc begins with the twisted and bubbly "Intro," where producer Papertoy really shows offs his chops. There's a lot going on in this short tune, with beats collapsing inward on themselves and later exploding outward in all directions. Meanwhile, Jones' vocals trip across the always-moving sound setting.

"I don't know nothing 'bout nothing, they think that 'cause I'm young," Jones sings to open "In The Dark," which takes the listener deeper into the brooding atmosphere of the album.

From there, "Say It Isn't So" dishes an unsettling carnival ride of a beat as Jones slouches into undulating waves of lyrics about getting by and "tryin' to make an honest living."

The final song on the album zooms out a bit to make a statement about Jones' trip through the hip-hop scene thus far. He's young, he's from Cleveland — and he's making a slicing up a unique sort of wormhole in the contemporary rap community. "It's Me" urges the listener here to seek originality in art.
