Colorforms (Colorforms Records)

It's hard to criticize an album for being repetitious and obscure when that's its aim -- as with Colorforms, a slowly unfurling drone-pop record demanding patience and unwavering attention.

Colorforms' fluid, impressionistic sound takes a new shape with every track. This Lakewood trio's songs frequently float past the nine-minute mark, adrift in layers of spectral synth, chiming sound effects, and ominous samples. The band's wide-screen soundtracks are tinged with bursts of mutated guitar, creating a disorienting effect that makes this disc easy to get lost in. This is sci-fi psychedelia, haunting free-form music that gradually expands into dense thickets of sound. These subdued, nonlinear jams won't exactly get the party started, but they will leave your ears buzzing as if they've been on a three-day bender.
