The summer sun set on Blossom Music Center on Friday, calling the end to a humid day filled with some of the most intriguingly heavy and hard-as-fuck music being made today.
Slayer prepped the already massive Mayhem Fest crowd for co-headliner Marilyn Manson, who took the stage for a sea of fist-pumping and cut-off T-shirts. He opened with the mind-blasting “We’re From America,” wrapped in black and sporting a jacket emblazoned with "Hell, Etc." He even brought out a giant black witch hat at one point.
Manson's band included Twiggy, back from a nearly 10-year hiatus. They are a seasoned and professional group but far from predictable. Constant showman Manson and crew built a huge and heavy wall of sound on the Blossom grounds. Their sound was so tight, controlled and brutal, they sounded glorious from every seat.
The band barreled through a set of songs that included quite a few cuts from Manson's two most recent albums. “Four Rusted Horses” was a solid highlight. He did perform a few older favorites like "Beautiful People," "Dope Show" and "Sweet Dreams." He also threw in “Tourniquet” and “Irresponsible Hate Anthem.” —Jara Anton
