D. Roof

Ingredients of Ignorance (Poverty City)

D. Roof rap Michael Jackson Sunday, May 18, at the Phantasy, Lakewood.

D. Roof is not on fire, but he's pretty hot. The Cleveland rapper has his own playbook for the game, and it's not based on drills other crews are running. "The Material Minded" runs down a familiar list of mainstream hip-hop beefs — from flashy Sucker Free videos to local rappers who talk like they're from Texas. But anti-rap hip-hop is now officially as clichéd as grills and blunts. More interesting is "The Text Books," which finds the rhymer-producer shouting out to boyhood heroes Winnie the Pooh and Michael Jackson, backed by a somber horn sample that sounds like a dying dream. Ingredients of Ignorance offers more complaints than solutions, but the stirring soul of "The Love?" is a good start.
