Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon electro-spazz Girl Talk

Like his electro-spazz compatriot Girl Talk, Dan Deacon blurs the line between artist and audience. Actually, he obliterates it, gnashing it between two enameled synthesizers and spitting it into a carnival-like celebration of squealing flesh. In concert, Deacon employs sine-wave generators, vocoders, and a cornucopia of effects pedals, turning his nerdy vibes into an all-consuming 21st-century dance party. He all but disappears into his art-rock freak-outs, becoming a mere outline of flying hair and flailing arms.

On his new Ultimate Reality DVD — a hallucinogenic collaboration with video artist Jimmy Joe Roche — Deacon stumbles deep into the rabbit hole. While Roche toys with trippy Technicolor projections, Deacon piles on steady, heady melodies that eventually spiral way into the cosmos. The Ultimate Reality Tour, which comes to town this week, is divided into two parts: First, Deacon and a pair of live drummers play along to Roche's visuals, which are beamed onto a giant screen. Then Deacon performs one of his typically frenzied solo sets. Prepare to have each and every one of your senses rewired.
