Felt 2: A Tribute To Lisa Bonet (Rhymesayers)

Dinosaur Jr. House of Blues, 308 Euclid Avenue 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, $29.50/$35, 216-241-5555
Does hip-hop's irony-saturated underground really need an album's worth of messing with Denise Huxtable? Of course not, and Felt -- the all-star MC duo of Slug (Atmosphere) and Murs (Living Legends), who first teamed up for a similar non-homage to Christina Ricci -- is smart enough to know it.

The real tribute here is to the simple pleasures of the old school, complete with Beastie Boys beats and Ice-T rhymes, and a clarity that has been elusive in Slug's own diary-keeping. "Breaker Down Like a Shotgun" has its moments of introverted poetry, but also rhymes "Wisconsin" with "Johnson" and quotes Nelly; if that hardly counts as progress, it's entertaining nonetheless.

While the disc is reminiscent of Murs' more no-nonsense aesthetic, the real star is Atmosphere producer Ant, who keeps things funky and light, even when gloom threatens to descend. Overall, it's a disc that can stand alongside its participants' best works. It sounds like Slug and Murs had fun, and so will you.
