Furnace St.

Since 1998, '80s-influenced Furnace St. has emerged as Cleveland's answer to late-era Depeche Mode. Respected but not particularly renowned, the duo attracted an assortment of national and local electronica talent to assemble People, an album of reworked tracks from 2002's Headmusic LP.

Remixes, however, are really only significant in hip-hop, where the process effectively creates a new song. In techno genres, remixing usually implies the application of half a dozen masturbatory manipulations, and they're all here. Filament 38 gives "Attila" a standard 4/4 pounding monobeat and underwater vocals. Chew's Eye Shop gives "Shanghai" the Kruder & Dorfmeister treatment, dropping chilly space between verses. Thoushaltnot and newbies Missile Command, thankfully, keep their ears on the songs' original versions. People ultimately isn't just a studio wank; when given the proper care, the music retains its original strength.
