GG Allin & the Murder Junkies

Terror in America (MVD)

10% Animal
The late G.G. Allin's limited oeuvre is best appreciated if you watch his unhinged performances. While tracks such as "I'm Going to Rape You" and "Suck My Ass It Smells" amplify Allin's confrontational aesthetic, the vocals here are mostly a mumbled blur. The music is undistinguished three-chord bash in the vein of Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. All that stands out is Allin's aggressive lunatic stomp, which makes Henry Rollins seem cuddly by comparison.

Filmed during Allin's final tour -- after his release from jail and a month before he overdosed -- this DVD compiles three shows from '93 that serve as a highlight reel of his bad behavior. In a jockstrap, Allin gyrates in front of the stage, screaming into the microphone and using it to thwack anyone within arm's distance. He cuts his forehead with a beer can and lets the blood run down his face.

But this is tame by Allin's legendary standards (or lack thereof). He became famous for acts of defecation and base degradation. And at times on this disc, it appears as if the then-37-year-old "performance artist" is as bored with his shtick as we are.
