J. Mascis and Cobra Verde Form New Band

Sweet Apple, a new collaboration between J. Mascis and a couple of members of Cobra Verde, will release their debut album in April.

The band includes Dinosaur Jr's Mascis, Cobra Verde's Tim Parnin and John Petkovic, and Dave Sweetapple, who plays bass in another of Mascis' side projects, Witch.

Sweet Apple got together in December, after Petkovic left Cleveland and started driving to clear his mind of some things, including the recent death of his mother. Old pal Sweetapple called him and invited him over to his Vermont home. Masics, who lives in Massachusetts, was then called in.

Mascis told Petkovic to go home and write some songs. He did — 25 of them. Parnin was recruited, and the quartet recorded its debut album, Love & Desperation, in Cleveland and Massachusetts. The 12-song set comes out on April 10 on Tee Pee Records.

You can hear one of Sweetapple's songs, "Do You Remember," on their MySpace page. It sounds a little like a sludgier Kiss to me. —Michael Gallucci
