John Mayer's concert at Blossom last night was so hot you almost forgot it was, oh, 45 degrees or so on the lawn. His sound was polished, he played a nice mix of old and new ("Belief," "Why Georgia," "Gravity," "Covered in Rain," "Waiting on the World to Change"), and he even managed to abstain from overindulgent guitar histrionics.
But the one thing John Mayer should do less of is talking. The Rolling Stone anointed "Guitar God" is not funny. At all. During the concert, he cracked un-amusing jokes about service dogs, asking the camera crew to zoom in on a Lab in the audience (we saw a nice view of the canine's rear end), and named said Lab "Popcorn" for reasons unclear to everyone but Mayer, who nonetheless found this considerably funny.
He also quipped that as a singer/guitarist, his hands and his mouth are constantly at war. Then, as if to prove it, he interrupted himself mid-monologue by playing some loud chords (isn't that, like, totally hilarious?).
Apparently, Mayer thinks so. He’s currently embarking on a side career as a stand-up comic at New York’s Comedy Cellar. Judging by the clip above, he should stick with songwriting. -- Rebecca Meiser
