Kimberly Rishert Septet

Game On

Lost in La Mancha Narrated by Jeff Bridges

Get past the amateurish packaging and liner notes, and you'll encounter a surprisingly sophisticated jazz recording here. Clevelander Kimberly Rishert (Juilliard School graduate in bass, 1998) is an accomplished composer, equally at home with the blues, ballads, and uptempo neo-boppers, and she has assembled a very good band to showcase her stuff.

The stalwarts are Dave Morgan, the Youngstown State professor who's become Northeast Ohio's go-to jazz bassist; trumpeter Duane Eubanks, possessor of a pure, pearly tone that lends itself beautifully to the more romantic efforts; drummer Gerry Gibbs, the son of legendary vibraphonist Terry Gibbs; and Rishert herself, who plays bass on a few tracks. She also contributes some poetry; her words on "Bunker Shot" bespeak a hip lady ready for the big time, and the music that follows on that track -- gnarly, swinging, complex, and ultimately spiritual -- suggests that she's right. For further information about this CD -- only 100 copies were made -- visit Rishert at the Range in Avon, where she's developing into a professional golfer.
