Local Band in Focus

Ravenna Arsenal

Meet the Band: Kenny Royer (drums), Michael Shea (guitar, vocals), Aaron Shay (guitar, vocals), and Bill Govan (bass, vocals)

Shay (or Is That Shea?) Anything: Cousins Royer and Govan, along with schoolmate Shay, got together to play covers for a family party before trying original material. The current lineup came together around 2008, when they recruited Shea, who was studying guitar under Shay. Got that?

Bring at Least One Earplug: Govan says the primarily instrumental Ravenna-based band plays "heavy rock & roll," with some stoner and psych rock thrown into the mix. "We're not the loudest band," he says, "but we get loud."

Imitation = Flattery: In addition to borrowing from Kyuss, Ravenna Arsenal lean on Isis and Karma to Burn for inspiration. "We're damn near a Karma to Burn tribute band," says Govan.

Huge in Portage: The band took its name from a 21,000-acre armory near their practice space. By adopting it, Govan boasts, "we can say Ravenna Arsenal: Biggest thing in Portage County."

Why You Should Hear Them: Ravenna Arsenal specialize in unpretentious, fist-pumping, stoner-rock awesomeness. What's not to like?
