Local Band in Focus

How to Breathe Underwater

Meet the Band: Cassie Bishop (guitar, vocals), Genevieve Jencson (keyboards, vocals), Myra Wasylyna (bass, vocals), and Lisa Paulovcin (drums)

Breathe Deep: The band began as a solo project for Bishop, who wanted the name to reflect her own boundary breaking. "People are capable of much more than they think," she says. "Limits come from our fears and being conditioned by other people's notions."

Valhalla, They Are Coming: How to Breathe Underwater released their five-song demo, Viking Funeral, earlier this year. A fan once told them that their music sounded like an old-school Norse funeral, where the body would be put on a small boat and then lit on fire. Their full-length debut is due later this year.

Darkness on the Edge of Frowns: The band plays all-girl indie rock that occasionally hides in the shadows. Ambient rushes often cloud the songs. But the "darkness is about creating other worlds with the music," says Jencson. "They're not necessarily dark places, just shadowy, because you might not be able to find them if you were just walking down the street."

Why You Should Hear Them: These aren't girlie girls. How to Breathe Underwater are more evil and heavier then you might expect.
