Local indie singer-songwriter Holden Laurence received rave reviews for his debut, 2017’s Wild Empty Promises. “It’s a fantastic debut that blends Mope-rock, Post-punk and New Wave deftly with its bittersweet tone and cinematic delivery,” Scene's Eric Sandy wrote at the time of its release.
On his new album, Rewire, Holden expands his musical range with “walls of synths” and “glassy guitars, driving grooves and songwriting that is equal parts eloquent and visceral,” at it's put in a press release.
With its rich vocals and synthesizer swirls, album opener “Shadows of Old Love” has a Smiths-like vibe to it, and thick bass riffs and plaintive vocals give “Speaking in Tongues” an ’80s feel (think New Order).
Holden recruited long-time collaborator and drummer Michael O’Brien of the Modern Electric to play alongside him on the album, which was recorded in Cleveland at Fe True Productions and in Milwaukee at Bobby Peru Recording Studios.
All vocals and instruments, with the exception of drums and percussion, were performed by Laurence.
The album comes out tomorrow, and the talented Laurence plays a release party with Niights and Punchdrunk Tagalongs at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Mahall’s 20 Lanes in Lakewood.
