Given the ever-shifting terrain of the local metal scene, it’s remarkable that this veteran local metal group that first formed in 2006 is still going strong. Recorded locally at Brainchild Recording Studio with producer Noah Buchanan (Solipsist, Arecibo), the band’s latest album is representative of the band’s approach. The group plays what it calls “melodic metal” and that’s an apt description of its approach. The combination of heavy guitar riffs and harmony vocals in album opener “Parasite” makes the song sound like a cross between Metallica and Alice in Chains. The moody “Lost Within” also provides a showcase for the band’s ability to deliver harmony vocals over loud guitars. The playing here is so intensively intricate, it’s likely to draw comparisons to prog acts like Rush, and that’s a real testament to the band’s terrific musicianship.

Lower 13 performs with Fleshgod Apocalypse at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Foundry.
