Yes, lots of people over 40 who haven’t bought a CD since high school really like Matchbox Twenty. (In fact, three of the five CDs in such fans' collection are Matchbox Twenty CDs. The other two are frontman Rob Thomas’ solo album and Santana’s Supernatural, which includes Thomas singing “Smooth.”) And sure, Thomas seems like a real asshole. But that’s no real reason to hate on them.
OK, it's a little bit of a reason hate them. No one likes an asshole. But Matchbox Twenty's actually given us some fine radio songs over the past decade. “3AM,” “Real World,” and “If You’re Gone” may be super-slick and devoid of any real human emotions, but they have gigantic hooks. And you can sing along to them in the car. And they’re quite capable of rocking the cheap seats, like those that are still available for Thursday’s concert at the Q. -- Michael GallucciMatchbox Twenty perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, at Quicken Loans Arena, 100 Gateway Plaza. Tickets are $35 to $75, available by calling 216-241-2121.
