Mic Check: The New York Dolls at the Beachland Ballroom on Wednesday

When the New York Dolls got back together in 2006 after breaking up more than 30 years ago, it could’ve been a total disaster. But their reunion CD, One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This, plays like a grown-up version of the spitfire rock these architects of punk mastered back in the ’70s. Of course, with 3/5 of the original band dead, the new Dolls don’t sound exactly like the old ones. But original singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain flash their sass in a close approximation of the noise heard on 1973’s self-titled debut and the following year’s Too Much Too Soon. And the new guys are more than capable of churning out the three-chord guitar rock heard in classics like “Personality Crisis” and “Babylon.” Live, the Dolls mix up One Day material with the stuff you really want to hear. -- Michael Gallucci The New York Dolls perform at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, at the Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road. Tickets are $25. Call 216-383-1124 for more information. For a preview, listen to “Personality Crisis” below.
