When the
New York Dolls got back together in 2006 after breaking up more than 30 years ago, it could’ve been a total disaster. But their reunion CD,
One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This, plays like a grown-up version of the spitfire rock these architects of punk mastered back in the ’70s.
Of course, with 3/5 of the original band dead, the new Dolls don’t sound exactly like the old ones. But original singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain flash their sass in a close approximation of the noise heard on 1973’s self-titled debut and the following year’s
Too Much Too Soon. And the new guys are more than capable of churning out the three-chord guitar rock heard in classics like “Personality Crisis” and “Babylon.” Live, the Dolls mix up
One Day material with the stuff you really want to hear. --
