This weekend’s top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who’s paid to pick them:
Friday: Like former sparring partners the Killers,
the Bravery give the synths a rest on their second album,
The Sun and the Moon, and aim for the cheap seats with a set of guitar-guided arena rockers. Without the New Wave-retro stench and goofy faux-hawks, the band comes off like a new-era U2, with big, sweeping choruses and overly earnest vocals. They play the Agora tonight.
Saturday: Need a date idea for tonight? The Cleveland Museum of Art is hosting
Monet ‘til Midnight, featuring its super-popular exhibit of works by the dead French impressionist. The show has been extended through the holiday weekend, and folks have a chance to check it out until midnight tonight. So grab your sweetie and cuddle beneath a bunch of paintings of floating water lilies. Nothing gets us in the mood for some late-night lovin’ like “La Chapelle de Notre-Dame de Grace, Honfluer.”
Sunday: It’s oodles of emo when the
Tooth & Nail Tour comes to House of Blues with MxPx, the Classic Crime, the Fold, and Run Kid Run. But don’t lump North Carolina’s Sullivan in with all those emo groups. They steer clear of my-girl’s-gone-and-I-feel-like-crying songs on their new album,
Cover Your Eyes. In fact, they go way over to the other side, spinning narrative tales about mean, bitter people and the sorta bad things they do to those around them – like on “Great for My Collection,” in which the mentally deranged protagonist shares his deepest twisted thoughts with the woman he’s holding hostage. Good times!
