Blue Lunch
Above the Fold
(Rip Cat Records)
This veteran local blues/swing band has gotten some good traction on this album. Band leader Robert Frank tell us it’s the first recording the band has released that has “charted” on the first to get airplay on Sirius/XM. The songwriting is particularly sharp. “Ain’t Tryin’ to Kill Nobody” has a bluesy swagger to it, and “Everybody’s on the Phone,” a song about how “everybody’s always talking on the phone,” really swings. A potent harmonic solo distinguishes “The Long Game,” and “No Time Like the Present” features some intricate horn work. The lively songs here should sound even better when the band, which can really kick out the jams, plays them live.
Blue Lunch performs at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, at Blue Rock Café in Hudson and at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Parkview Nightclub.
